Wayne Rooney reveals captaincy responsibilities


Wayne Rooney has explained some of the other aspects of his Manchester United captaincy role as he enjoys fulfilling the responsibilities on and off the field.

The Reds skipper revealed to ManUtd.com he is assisting in a number of different areas, including youth development, and was kept busy during his recent spell on the sidelines because of a three-match suspension.
After returning with an impressive display in the Manchester derby, the England star will be a pivotal figure on the pitch again but remains hugely influential around the club.
When asked if there were any elements of the captaincy job that surprised him, he replied: "No, not really. As I've said before, there are different things you have to get involved in, in terms of meetings outside the club and trying to have an influence on the youth development in the club.

"So certain things like that are great to have a say in and an influence on how things are going. But it’s all something I’m happy to do. I’m enjoying it but, again, the main thing I want to do as captain is to be successful [as a team] because that will be a great honour."
Assisting the young players who have broken into the senior squad is a job he shares with some of his more experienced colleagues.
"It’s not just me but a lot of us – especially the lads who have been here for a long time like myself, Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick," Rooney explained. "There are a lot of us who can help these younger players with our experience of being through what they are going through now.
"We’ve also had a lot of young players actually coming into the first-team squad this season, with the likes of Willo [James Wilson] and Tyler Blackett. Even though they might not realise they need help, they sometimes need the
